OUR VISION
The Famagusta Refuree Movement has been established in 1976 aiming the return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants.
This Movement has been established following the initiative of certain personalities from Famagusta, following the length of time that passed and Famagusta was still under occupation. It was considered that such an effort would contribute to the return of the city, as well as acting as a means of pressure towards the government and the political parties.
12 members comprise the Management Board, with Mr Kikis Cristophides holding the presidency. The Movement also functions on a district basis in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca where it is represented by District Committees of 9 members.
The Political Committee comprised by 8 members handles the follow up and promotion of the political issue of Famagusta.
The Movement expresses the voice of active Famagusta civilians whom as members have realised that it is crucial to initiate civil actions to achieve the target of the return of the city.
It remains an independent movement bearing no connection or involvement of any kind with any political party.
Up to this day and although 30 years have passed, the standstill situation of the city of Famagusta constitutes perhaps the most dramatic aspect of the occupied land issue, since it still remains a Ghost Town.
The extent of the damage caused is invaluable and it causes disgrace for current European reality.
Inspire the fact that the Famagusta issue has been discussed many times over in the past, in conjunction to various scenarios of solving the Cyprus problem and as an intention of goodwill in doing so, as a means of re-establishing trust and cooperation between the two communities, as well as a voting from the UN and a relevant decision from the European Parliament, the situation still remains in a standstill position as it was then.
Following the negative results of the referenda and in conjunction to the extensively negative consequences that concern the benefits of the Cyprus people as a whole, the lawful civilians of Famagusta, acting through this Movement, have decided to actively take measures towards each necessary direction aiming only to achieve the return to their city under a secure environment and freedom.
The return of Famagusta in conjunction to the measures of supporting the Turkish Cypriots as suggested by the European Union, will eliminate the distance created between the two communities following the referenda, and set a means towards the reunification of the island.
The Famagusta Refugee Movement is organising many events that aim of keeping the issue alive. One of the recent events, which the Famagusta Refugee Movement co-organised, was the festival in Famagusta on the 30th June at the "Constantia" beach in our occupied city, together with the Turkish-Cypriots.
This event has been a great success and gave the necessary incentives to other refugees to be actively involved.
